Hi,

I just got guildwars and so did my brother. I was just wondering about PVP.

To be able to PVP do you have to select PVP only character ? Because I want to PVP but not all the time. I want to later on in the game.

Also with a ranger/warrior build do you have to take a melee weapon? If so what is the best build for being a marksman basicly, mainly using bow and special arrows and shot sand what not.

Thx

If you choose to play an RP character, you can still PVP. There are some smaller arenas for low levels, but most of the PVP happens once you hit 20 (then you can do all the different types of PVP).

You don't have to use a melee weapon if you don't want to. If you keep all the melee weapon attributes empty and use a bow, you can still gain some benefit from stances offered by Tactics. There's nothing that says you have to even use the secondary. You could put everything into your ranger attributes.

As for the best build, check the PVX wiki
There are alot of builds to go through, but you will get an idea of some good skills and how they work together to decide what you would like to use yourself. Be sure to check the discussions tab on the builds you like to see what other players think about them (they will be able to tell you the weaknesses and give good tips on how to correct it).

That said, you'll learn best just through experimenting on your own. It'll cost a bit buying skills on your first character, because you won't necessarily use all the ones you buy when you find one you like. Just have fun with it.

well hrm....

No you don't have to pick a PVP only character to PVP.....although you can create one at anytime with max armor/weapons and jump into pvp although you will behind the curve with available skills.

You can also PVP later on in the game playing a Roleplaying (PVE) character...you will have a better understanding of how the game works..but most of it will be useless in a PVP arena...but it is still a bit of knowledge.

I play both PVE and PVP and use my pve toon for pve stuff and my PVP toon to pvp...PVP characters have the advantage of being able to create max armor/weapons and choosing any skills "unlocked" on the account were as a pve toon has to buy or trade for max armor/weapons and can only use skills that has been unlocked for that character.

www.guildwiki.org is a great place to check out for information....this forum is also one of the best places.

Welcome to guild wars..... btw if you want to be truely competetive in PVP you need all 3 chapters to have access to all the skills....but mainly for lower/medium end pvp you can get by with one or two chapters...although 3 is better.

They sale a bundle pack for around $100 bucks at Sam's club.

So basicly .. PVP and PVE are two different games really .. You put in effort for PVE gear that lets you PVE ? and you just get an auto PVP toon with everything you could dream of without any effort .. sounds kinda lame.

Half the fun of WOW was that your effort you put into getting the top gear was to achive better things in PVP and beat people who are less geared than you. Sure it took a bit of skill out but you could still tell the good players regardless of good gear.

See, that's not what we think is half the fun, if you think that is, go back to WoW. Here everyone is on equal ground and it's pure skill. You really should leave one character slot open for PvP. Easily have lots of stuff many people never get in PvE becsue they're lazy, like superior vigor runes. It also saves you a lot of time when you get kicked out of a group because you don't have a particular skill or weapon. This is definitely not lame, PvE is supposed to be fun, not endless grind so you can do the "fun" PvP (with no skill whatsoever).

Also, unless you get the unlock for PVP, you still have to gain new runes and upgrades through PVE play. If you haven't ever ID'd a rune playing the game, you'll still have to earn enough faction to unlock it in PVP. So you're not just getting everything right out the gate. You still have to work your way up to the PVP build you want.

Hi back. Welcome to Guild Wars and GWGuru.

RP characters can engage in limited PvP at low levels. This is typically done by entering an arena from one of the major cities (Old Ascalon, Shing Jea Monastery, or Kamadan, Jewel of Istan). Other PvP will unlock for your RP character after you reach Level 20. Note: Once an RP character reaches L20, they may not have all attributtes pts available to them. There are typically two Att Pt quests worth 15 pts each. Having/not having these points can make a difference in your competativeness. In the end, a fully developed character should have 200 attribute points to spend.

If you want to hop strait into PvP, you can make a PvP only character. This character will only have access to PvP areas, and will not be able to take part in the RP aspects of the game.

So if you want to get used to the skills and how they work, RP character and play through the tutorial area. If you want to start with a top level character, wtih full points and many pre-made build available, make a PvP only character.

No, you don't need to bring a melee weapon. More accurately, you should bring a weapon that you have spec'd your attributes to. If you put points into marksmanship, bring a bow, not a hammer. If you put points into Axe Mastery, bring an axe, not a sword. Bringing a weapon that you are not spec'd in will result in a fraction of the damage that the weapon is capable of. If you find you don't like using a certain weapon, you can always change your attribute distribution when you are in an outpost (town, non-battle, non explorable area).

THe builds are wide and varried. Experiment and see what suits you best. Read the skill descriptions, they are an important part of how you will play. Finding ways to have your skills compliment each other can make for very powerful builds. Some skills go nicely together, some negate eachother. Read them and see how they work.

Hope you enjoy the game and the community.

Cheers,

Countess

To make it simple...

You can play any kind of PvP with your RPG/PvE character. But you have to buy max armour, weapons and unlock many skills to be compatitive and this takes time. This can take you weeks or months to get, depending on how much you play.

Or... you can create a PvP character right away with max armour and weapons and skills (you have to unlock them first) and play PvP. It takes maybe 5min to make a PvP character.

So whats the difference? Its pure cosmetic. Your RPG/PvE character can get fashinable armour, fancy weapons and other things, while PvP characters dont get this. But they can get max armour and weapons right away, while a RPG/PvE character has to work for it.

Then stay in WOW. GW is very different to that game, "beat people who are less gear than you" ha!. You'll fail in GW with that mind set.
